Breakdown
How it works
Every Muslim who has food beyond their basic needs on the night of Eid must pay zakat al-Fitr for themselves and each dependant, including children and newborns. It is one sa'a of the local staple — commonly valued at 2.5 kg of rice, wheat or dates — and most authorities publish a cash equivalent each Ramadan.
Formula
Worked example
Family of 4 at 8 per kg: 2.5 × 8 = 20 each → 80 total. UAE 2026 fixed rate: AED 25 per person → AED 100.
Frequently asked questions
When should it be paid?
Any time in Ramadan, ideally in the last days, and definitely before the Eid prayer. Paid after the prayer, it counts as ordinary charity.
Who receives it?
The poor and needy, ideally locally. Charities in the UAE (Zakat Fund), Saudi (Ehsan), Qatar and the UK collect and distribute it.
Is it the same as zakat?
No. Zakat al-Fitr is a small fixed per-person charity tied to Ramadan; zakat al-mal is 2.5% of wealth above the nisab, due annually.
