How it works

Full-time workers get 5.6 × days worked per week (max 28 days). Part-timers get the same 5.6 weeks pro-rata. Starters and leavers accrue 1/12 of the annual entitlement per month. Irregular-hours and part-year workers accrue 12.07% of hours worked, which is 5.6 ÷ 46.4 working weeks.

Formula

Entitlement = 5.6 × days per week (max 28)
Pro-rata = annual × months employed ÷ 12
Irregular hours = hours worked × 12.07%

Worked example

3 days a week: 16.8 days. A 5-day worker starting in July: 28 × 9/12 = 21 days. 1,000 irregular hours: 120.7 hours' holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Are bank holidays extra?

Not by law — the 28 days can include the 8 bank holidays. Many employers give 20 + bank holidays, or 25 + bank holidays as a benefit.

Can my employer round down?

Entitlement can be rounded up but never down. Half days should be honoured.

Do I get paid for untaken holiday when I leave?

Yes, accrued but untaken statutory leave must be paid in your final pay; contractual extra leave depends on your contract.
