Breakdown
How it works
Instead of a lump-sum gratuity, DIFC employers pay a monthly contribution into a defined-contribution plan: 5.83% of basic salary for the first five years of service and 8.33% thereafter. You can add voluntary contributions and choose from low-, medium- or high-risk funds (including Shariah options). The balance, plus or minus returns, is yours when you leave.
Formula
Worked example
AED 25,000 basic for 3 years at 5% return: AED 1,458 a month → about AED 56,000. Federal gratuity for the same period would be AED 52,500.
Frequently asked questions
Is DEWS better than gratuity?
Contribution rates are set to match the gratuity accrual, so it depends on fund returns. Positive returns and the fact that it is funded (not an employer IOU) make DEWS generally better; a bad market year can make it worse.
Can I take DEWS money early?
Only when you leave DIFC employment. Voluntary contributions can be withdrawn more flexibly depending on plan rules.
What about my pre-2020 service?
Accrued gratuity up to 31 January 2020 is frozen under the old rules and paid by the employer on exit; it can optionally be transferred into DEWS.
